Studio Values & Expectations

The space is designed for kids who want to engage thoughtfully in a shared creative space.   Makers have agency over what they create and how they approach their work,  and I provide clear boundaries around safety, materials and respect for fellow makers.

Your child is ready for Oakland Rd. Art Club if they possess: 

• A desire to explore, experiment, and embrace uncertainty and imperfection

• A willingness to respect tools and supplies

• An awareness of how actions affect others

• An openness to redirection if necessary

• The recognition that boundaries are what make meaningful creative freedom possible.

ACTIVELY ENCOURAGED:

• Imaginative, experimental, weird, abstract, and unconventional ideas

• Emotional expression (including frustration, sadness, excitement, humor)

• Personal symbolism and storytelling

• Projects that challenge norms through metaphor, play, and inquiry

ACTIVELY DISCOURAGED:

• Hate speech or symbols targeting individuals or groups

• Violence meant to intimidate

• Sexualized content or explicit imagery

• Harassment, bullying, or threats, even if framed as “jokes”

• Content that disrupts others’ ability to work safely or comfortably

 GRAY AREAS: 

• We pause, talk, and ask questions

• We focus on intent, impact, and context

• We redirect rather than punish or shame

• We look for alternative ways to express the idea that preserve meaning without harm

The goal is to protect BOTH individual expression and the collective environment and to teach that freedom and responsibility grow together.
